Are you perimenopausal?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, during which a woman’s body experiences significant hormonal changes. It can start as early as 10 years before the final menstrual period and typically lasts several years, ending when menopause is reached—defined as 12 consecutive months without a period.

You may know you’re in perimenopause if you experience a variety of symptoms, including:

Irregular Periods

Changes in your menstrual cycles, including heavier or lighter periods, and varying cycle lengths.

Hot Flushes and Night Sweats

Sudden feeling of intense warmth that spreads over the body, often accompanied by redness and sweating.

Mood Swings

Increased irritability, depression or anxiety.

Sleep Disturbances

Trouble sleeping or staying asleep. Change in bedtime or wake up time.

Vaginal Dryness and Decrease in Libido

Discomfort, itching, and pain during intercourse. Increase of vaginal infections. Decrease in sexual desire or interest in sex.

Weight Changes

Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen.

These symptoms can vary in intensity and duration from person-to-person, making it important to recognize them as part of a natural phase of life. If you suspect you are in perimenopause, understanding these changes can help you navigate this journey and seek appropriate support with confidence.

During perimenopause, hormone levels, including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, fluctuate significantly and can exhibit considerable variability, potentially leading to a range of symptoms. Perimenopause can occur up to 10 years before menopause and typically lasts on average of 4 yrs but some experience the transition for up to 8 years.

  • Perimenopause is not defined by an age or a blood test, rather the onset of perimenopausal symptoms. Common signs include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, fatigue, and changes in sleep patterns. You may also experience changes in libido, memory, and skin. These symptoms can vary from woman to woman, and the transition can last several years. If you’re noticing these changes, it may be helpful to consult with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and confirm if you're perimenopausal.
